Reader’s Question:

If I purchase a motorcycle and have a lease out on it, do I need full coverage car insurance on it? I live in Oregon.

John

Beaverton, OR

I think when you said “full coverage” you are referring to “fully covering the motorcycle itself.” If that is what you meant, you are talking about collision and comprehensive coverages.

If you do not have the title to the motorcycle, I think your lease company will require you to carry these two coverages to protect their motorcycle. Plus, since it is leased (and not just financed) your lease company may require you to carry higher limits of additional coverages like property damage liability and bodily injury liability. Please verify with your leasing company to check this.

Reader’s Question:

I have recently received my 1st speeding ticket in Oregon. My parents are going to add me on their insurance policy next week and I was wondering if this speeding ticket will be disclosed to them upon the insurance provider reviewing of my driving record.

Frances

Beaverton, OR

If you have plead guilty by paying the fine on the speeding ticket in Oregon then the infraction for the violation will be put on your driving record at this point in almost all states. If insurance points are to be evaluated to your drivers license they would also be done so at this point in time. You can verify with your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to find out the number of points or if your state assigns points for traffic infractions.

When your parents notify their insurance provider in Oregon that you are licensed and want to put you on their auto insurance, the insurance company will usually pull your motor vehicle record (MVR) and therefore see the speeding violation. If the speeding ticket is not yet on your driving history but there is an application for auto insurance that requests information on your driving history such as if you have any tickets you would need to disclose or list this ticket.

Depending upon the insurance providers rating system this may affect the insurance rates you receive and your parent’s total insurance premium. Your parents should be able to know about their insurance company’s rating system for traffic violations by asking their agent.

Reader’s Question:

I received a traffic violation in Idaho but I am a resident in Oregon. Will this be sent back to my driving record in Oregon?

Michael

Portland, OR

Oregon and Idaho are both members of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) so the ID ticket infraction will be reported back to Oregon’s Department of Transportation.

Moving violations stay on Oregon driving records for approximately 10 years from the conviction date, according to Department of Motor Vehicle. Oregon does not operate on a point system for traffic violations, so points will not be assigned for Idaho moving offenses.

You can contact the OR DOT to get more information about how they handle out of state tickets, specifically your offense from Idaho, and if the specific violation you were cited for would go on your Oregon driving record if you are convicted of it in ID.
